MOUNT VERNON, WA (April 29, 2009) \u2013 With the arrival of spring, Bethany Covenant Church<\/a> has resumed its Community Garden project that, along with produce, grows relationships spanning generations and ethnic groups.

\nThe church first started the garden on its property in 2007. Retired members lead the effort, but people of all ages – including children from local schools – participate.<\/p>\n

\"Garden\"The church has four goals for the garden:
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Strengthen relationships.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Teach children foundational food growing techniques.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Cultivate patience and appreciation of God\u2019s creations and the rewards of work.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Create surplus food for those in need.<\/p>\n

The garden is grown in five raised beds that include vegetables such as sweet peas, green peas, spinach, radishes and onions. People work in the garden every Monday and Thursday for two hours.<\/p>\n

The project also includes an after-school program called the Children of the Valley.\u00a0 Children eligible for free lunches in five surrounding grade and middle schools come in after school to receive help with schoolwork. During the summer, the children help with the garden on Thursdays (see accompanying photo).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have received really positive responses,\u201d says Andy Anderson, the garden coordinator. \u201cThe kids really like it. In the future, we want to explore how to become more effective relating to the children in spiritual matters.\u201d<\/p>\n
