{"id":4415,"date":"2007-06-11T16:12:32","date_gmt":"2007-06-11T21:12:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/?p=4415"},"modified":"2010-12-20T12:46:31","modified_gmt":"2010-12-20T17:46:31","slug":"5630","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/2007\/06\/11\/5630\/","title":{"rendered":"Lilly Endowment Grant Allows Pastor to Study in Jerusalem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HILMAR, CA (June 11, 2007) \u2013 Bruce Metcalf, pastor of Hilmar Covenant Church, left Sunday for a sabbatical in Israel and southern Europe thanks to a Lilly Endowment Grant of $45,000.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThe grant covers all the expenses for the four-month sabbatical, including transportation, lodging, meals, educational work, as well as someone to preach in his absence.<\/p>\n<p>Metcalf, and his wife, Kris, will spend five weeks in Israel studying at Jerusalem University College, where they will take two courses: \u201cThe History and Geography of Israel,\u201d and \u201cJesus and His Times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following their time in Israel, the couple will travel through several other countries, including Greece, Turkey, and Cyprus. They will visit locations that played a role in the Apostle Paul\u2019s ministry. Metcalf will maintain a <a href=\"http:\/\/web.mac.com\/brucemetcalf\/iWeb\/Site\/Sabbatical\/Sabbatical.html\" target=\"_blank\">blog detailing his trip<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the church surprised Metcalf when the Sunday morning service was interrupted to throw him a surprise party for his 25th anniversary as their pastor.
