FARGO, ND (March 30, 2009) \u2013 A family that attends Knollbrook Covenant Church<\/a> lost its home when the Red River breached a sandbag dike, and several other congregation members have been evacuated, says Pastor Greg Fullerton.

\nJason and Vicki Tang and their two children, who live in Moorhead, lost their home when water breached a dike. \u201cThey fought, and fought valiantly,\u201d says Fullerton.<\/p>\n

Moorhead is a community of 30,000 residents located across the river from Fargo and sits lower than the larger city. Residents, volunteers and others in both cities worked night and day to fill roughly 5.5 million sandbags, according to city officials. Click here for a YouTube video report<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an exhausted community,\u201d says Fullerton.<\/p>\n

The church held its service on Sunday, but canceled all regular activities, such as Sunday school. Fullerton also changed the traditional order of service. Instead, the people who were able to attend shared scripture, stories, their thoughts, and sang hymns.<\/p>\n

Although the river did not flow over the sandbags in Fargo, no one is resting easy<\/a>. A snowstorm with high winds is on its way, and officials hope that waves driven by the wind don\u2019t combine with the increased water pressure to force more breaches.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe still have a battle on our hands,\u201d Fullerton says. He adds that when the danger passes, the community will have to work together to take down the levee.<\/p>\n

Fullerton also gave thanks for the many people who traveled great distances to help build the miles of levees.<\/p>\n

No other Covenant churches in the Red River Valley area have reported issues related to flooding to the Northwest Conference office. Covenant News Service will publish additional information as it becomes available.<\/p>\n
