CHICAGO, IL (January 29, 2007) \u2013 Children in Vologda, Russia, will get a new camp because of offerings given last year by children at Evangelical Covenant Church camps in North America.

\nThe Association for Covenant Camps and Conference Centers (ACCCC) presented $55,000 to the Department of World Mission during an association meeting here last Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The money will pay for the purchase of property and construction of a building to house the campers, says Byron Amundsen, the denomination\u2019s coordinator for missionary services. The property and construction will cost $25,000 to $30,000 each.<\/p>\n
In the past, the association has given $15,000 to Christian Camping International\/Russia to train future camping leaders. Leaders at the new camp also received training at Covenant camps in the United States.<\/p>\n
Amundsen says he is excited that the camp will be a place for Covenant children, but also for children in local orphanages.<\/p>\n
The ACCCC chooses a special project each year and has given more than $700,000 over the past 14 years, according to David Auker, the executive director of Covenant Harbor Camp and Conference Center. \u201cThat\u2019s really amazing,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen you work together, you can change things.\u201d<\/p>\n
This year, the association will focus on raising $50,000 for needed improvements at the Covenant Bible Camp in Unalakleet, Alaska. According to the ACCCC annual report, the association lists improvements it hopes to fund:
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0$10,000 to rebuild the access road, on which even four-wheel-drive vehicles often get stuck
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0$15,000 to remodel the \u201ctemple,\u201d the kitchen, and a meeting and dining facility
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0$5,000 for a satellite telephone to replace current phones, which often cannot dial places beyond the camp due to environmental conditions
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0$10,000 for scholarships
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0$10,000 for a storage building<\/p>\n
