WALNUT CREEK, CA (March 12, 2009) \u2013 More than 100 church leaders, both clergy and lay, participated in a weekend institute at Hillside Covenant Church<\/a> focusing on the role churches can play in reconciliation and justice issues.

\n\"Hillside\"The Christian Community Development Association led the event held Friday through Sunday. Participants came from churches throughout the East Bay area of San Francisco and included many Covenant ministries in addition to Hillside \u2013 Hope Center Covenant Church<\/a>, the Renewal Project<\/a>, CHET<\/a> (Centro Hispano de Estudios Teologicos), and North Park University<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to what passions and ministries will grow and develop as a result of our gathering at this event,\u201d says Mae Cannon, Hillside executive pastor. \u201cIf we are to be champions of reconciliation, we must take an honest look at the attitudes, misconceptions, and the systems and structures that keep us from experiencing reconciled biblical community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ed Delgado, president of CHET<\/a>, the Covenant\u2019s training center for Hispanic ministers and lay people, participated in the event. The school also sponsored a one-credit class in Spanish – Development of Community in the Church (Desarollo de la Comunidad in la Iglesia). Robert Guerrero, pastor of Christian Community Church in the Dominican Republic, taught the class (accompanying photo).<\/p>\n

Other presenters included Mary Nelson of Bethel New Life Church in Chicago, who taught a class on \u201cListening to Your Community,\u201d and Barbara Skinner of the Skinner Leadership Institute<\/a> in Washington, D.C., who focused on the role of the church in reconciliation within the community. Leaders from the Red Del Camino Connection<\/a> based in the Dominican Republic also were present.<\/p>\n

Cannon facilitated a panel discussion following a dinner on Friday evening.<\/p>\n
