ALEXANDRIA, MN (December 10, 2008) \u2013 Tim Schmoyer, youth pastor at Alexandria Covenant Church, has launched a two-week \u201conline missions campaign<\/a>\u201d to involve teens around the world in an evangelization effort through social media such as Facebook.

\nFor weeks, Schmoyer has teased the campaign through his popular website<\/a>, advertising it as a \u201cfree mission trip.\u201d The trip is scheduled February 1-14.<\/p>\n

“Using the Internet makes it easier than ever to follow Jesus\u2019 command . . .”<\/h5>\n

During the trip, Schmoyer writes on his website, participants will be \u201cuploading videos, photos, posting links, using status updates to share what God\u2019s doing in their lives, writing notes, sending messages, posting on blogs, creating event invites to youth group, and anything else that will bring God up in a conversation that starts online and hopefully spreads to a face-to-face discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pre-trip training is slated for January 11-31 using materials that are already are available online. Outreach events and new-believer follow-up will start February 15. The follow-up will include a free four-part series<\/a> from Lifechurch.tv entitled \u201cWhat\u2019s Next.\u201d A Facebook group<\/a> has been established for everyone interested in the campaign.<\/p>\n

Using the Internet \u201cmakes it easier than ever\u201d to follow Jesus\u2019 command to \u201cGo and make disciples of all nations,\u201d Schmoyer writes on the campaign website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Recent political campaigns, especially that of President-elect Barack Obama, demonstrate the power of social networking, Schmoyer says. One of the training videos includes an interview with an Obama campaign worker on how she used social media to promote the candidate.<\/p>\n
