EVANSVILLE, MN (December 3, 2008) \u2013 Pastor Michael Murphy hopes that Calvary Covenant Church<\/a>\u2019s night of \u201cCarols and Dessert\u201d this Saturday evening (December 6) will give people a different perspective on the current recession as well as honor veterans.

\nThe program, which begins at 7 p.m., is a \u201ccombination of music, scripture and history,\u201d Murphy says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe program will remember the difficulties people faced during the Depression, but especially the war years and how sacrifices were made so people can enjoy Christmases today,\u201d Murphy says. He notes that one member of his congregation who lived through the Great Depression reminds people that economic difficulties were far worse during that time of our history.<\/p>\n

Murphy says he understands that a lot of people are hurting during the recession and even facing job losses but adds, \u201cRight now we have a lot of people who are all upset because they\u2019re going to have to buy a $60 sweater instead of a $90 sweater.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to singing familiar carols and hearing the Nativity story, attendees also will hear readings from the texts of Winston Churchill\u2019s 1941 speech to the United States on Christmas Eve, as well as columns from a small town writer\u2019s reflections on the times.<\/p>\n

By blending history and scripture, Murphy hopes attendees will \u201clet God shine his light in dark streets.\u201d<\/p>\n
