CHICAGO, IL (November 12, 2008) \u2013 Two women leaders in the Evangelical Covenant Church are profiled in Called<\/em> magazine<\/a>, which is targeted to \u201cfemale pastors and women in ministry.\u201d

\nThe separate articles focus on Lisa Orris and Catherine Gilliard. Orris is the director of evangelism for the Department of Church Growth and Evangelism and was the planning director for The Feast this past June in Green Lake, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n

Gilliard is pastor of Commissioned Disciples Covenant Church<\/a> in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and serves as president of the African American Ministers Association as well as the Association for Covenant Clergy Women. She also was the first woman to chair the denomination\u2019s Executive Board.<\/p>\n

The article profiling Orris<\/a> quotes her as saying the church must not change the gospel it communicates, but that it needs to change the way it communicates the gospel. Fifty years ago, Orris says, \u201cpeople still trusted the church. People still thought Christianity was a good thing. Not everybody thinks like that today.\u201d<\/p>\n

That change means doing more listening. \u201cOur approach to evangelism can\u2019t be this idea of \u2018I have all the answers, you know nothing – I\u2019m saved, you\u2019re not – I\u2019m churched, you\u2019re not,\u2019 \u201d Orris says. \u201cIt\u2019s got to be more of a sharing, and a listening, and appreciating people\u2019s stories and where they\u2019re at, which we haven\u2019t done for years as Christians.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the article profiling Gilliard<\/a>, the pastor shares how she has had to overcome racism and the belief among some in the church that women should not be pastors.<\/p>\n
