SAMMAMISH, WA (October 10, 2008) \u2013 Missio Lux Covenant Church launched on last Sunday with 150 in attendance. None of them will attend this Sunday. Or the Sunday after that.

\nPart of the church\u2019s plan always has been to meet together as a large group only once a month. During the other weeks, people will meet in \u201cmissio communities,\u201d says pastor Tamara Buchan.<\/p>\n

The groups won\u2019t necessarily meet on Sundays. Groups decide their own schedule.<\/p>\n

By not meeting every Sunday, Missio Lux (the name is Latin for Mission of Light) can devote more time and money to ministry, says Buchan.<\/p>\n

Sunday\u2019s launch was held at Pine Lake Covenant Church<\/a>, which has seeded the new congregation. Buchan spoke to the congregation about Joshua\u2019s desire to cross the Jordan River into the land God had set before them.<\/p>\n

The church already has been extensively involved in the community. On Monday, members were trained to lead discussions following the showing of Call and Response<\/em><\/a>, a documentary on human trafficking that will play in theaters across the country over the next several weeks. They will encourage people to return another night to form response teams.<\/p>\n

The church, with assistance from Pine Lake Covenant, funds the education of 32 Sudanese children at $100 per year so they can attend a boarding school in Kenya.<\/p>\n

One Sunday a month, members minister to the homeless in Occidental Park in Seattle. This Sunday, members will serve food at the park from 1-5 p.m. They also will distribute blankets, clothes, and sleeping bags.<\/p>\n

Missio Lux holds a healing prayer service on the fourth Tuesday of each month. It also has made Celebrate Recovery one of its core ministries.<\/p>\n

Buchan says launching a church for which there are few models presents its challenges and joys. \u201cIt\u2019s an adventure every day.\u201d<\/p>\n
