CHICAGO, IL (September 19, 2008) \u2013 The Hispanic Center for Theological Studies<\/a> (CHET) held its first-ever satellite classes in Chicago on Tuesday night, and the school\u2019s president is already is looking forward to expanding its offerings in the city.

\n\u201cWe\u2019re excited about this opportunity,\u201d says CHET President Ed Delgado.<\/p>\n

The Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) school was formed in1989 and has been a theological and pastoral training center for Hispanic church leaders, pastors, and lay leaders. The school has grown from 50 students to more than 300.<\/p>\n

CHET\u2019s main campus is located in Bell Gardens, California. The school has satellite campuses in San Diego and San Francisco as well as Spain and Mexico.<\/p>\n

The 12-week classes in Chicago are meeting at North Park Theological Seminary<\/a>. The first class to be offered is \u201cHistory of the Church in Latin America and the U.S.,\u201d which is taught by Salatiel Palomino. Palomino is an adjunct professor of theology at Northern Seminary in Lombard, Illinois, and pastor of a Hispanic congregation in Berwyn, Illinois.<\/p>\n

Palomino has a doctorate in Systematic Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary. In addition to pastoring Hispanic congregations, he has served as professor, dean and president of a seminary in Mexico, his native country, and was the founder and director of the Hispanic Theological Union in Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n

\u201cMen and Women in the Mission of God\u201d will begin October 2. The instructor, Nancy Reed, is a retired Covenant missionary who continues to serve in various capacities. She has been involved with the denomination\u2019s ministry for more than 40 years.<\/p>\n

Reed was instrumental in helping start the work of CIPE, the Confederation of Latin America Churches. She also worked behind the scenes to help establish a Hispanic Covenant Women Ministries presence in the Central Conference of the ECC.<\/p>\n

Delgado says he hopes to eventually offer classes on the South Side of Chicago. In the meantime, he is glad to work with the seminary. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t do this without the cooperation and support of North Park,\u201d Delgado says.<\/p>\n
