BELVIDERE, IL (July 28, 2008) \u2013 The shoppers kept asking the same questions at the Evangelical Covenant Church<\/a>\u2019s sale: \u201cIs it really free?\u201d and \u201cWhy are you doing this?\u201d

\nThe volunteers at what the church called \u201cThe Great Giveaway\u201d replied: \u201cGod\u2019s gift of love to us is free; we\u2019re just sharing his love in this way.\u201d<\/p>\n

The congregation\u2019s Women Ministries group decided to hold \u201cThe Great Giveaway.\u201d When they asked for donations from the church, the congregation gave generously. Boxes and bags piled up in the church.<\/p>\n

A large crew of volunteers of all ages organized the donations. Toy room coordinators five-year-old Anna Malon and three-year-old Kylee Reynolds, sorted and set out the donations in their area.<\/p>\n

Coordinator Nancy Ellis said the customers told her the items were going to make a difference in their lives. One woman picked out clothes for her fianc\u00e9 to wear to a job interview, and a man who recently had been injured in a car accident found a recliner he needed, but could not have afforded.<\/p>\n

\u201cA young lady happily chose a Bible exclaiming that it was the one she had been hoping to have one day,\u201d Ellis said. \u201cA volunteer was able to counsel her on where to begin reading.\u201d Shoppers also left with a bag in which was placed a tract and homemade loaf of bread made by a church member.<\/p>\n

Organizers hope the event will change the lives of the people who attended, but the giveaway already has changed the church\u2019s approach to the community and people in need. \u201cWe\u2019ll never have another regular rummage sale again,\u201d Ellis said.<\/p>\n
