WASILLA, AK (July 18, 2008) \u2013 Building projects at two Evangelical Covenant Churches in Alaska will expand both congregations\u2019 ability to minister to their communities.

\nThe Mat-Su Covenant Church<\/a> in Wasilla recently completed an 11,000-square-foot addition that will enable them to provide meals and shelter to the homeless.<\/p>\n

Collaborating with the Family Promise Inter-Faith Hospitality Network<\/a> the congregation will provide lodging, three daily meals, and other care to participants for one week each quarter.<\/p>\n

A local day center is available to guests where they may pursue employment, shower, and do laundry. It also provides them with a mailing address and a base for housing and employment searches, and a social worker offers case management services.<\/p>\n

A grant from the ECC Churches Planting Ministries program is helping the congregation begin this collaboration. The addition also provides space for Christian education and offices.<\/p>\n

Community Covenant Church<\/a> in Eagle River has nearly completed construction of its expansion. The usable floor space has doubled and increased sanctuary capacity. The extra space also includes a library, youth area, prayer rooms, and a large gym\/multipurpose room.<\/p>\n

The church is considering several ways in which they can use the building for service to the community, such as youth activities for children through twelfth grade and events for seniors. Recovery and preventative care ministries also are being considered.<\/p>\n

Both expansions were funded in part by loans through National Covenant Properties. <\/a><\/p>\n
