CERESCO, NE (June 10, 2008) \u2013 One family that attends Ceresco Covenant Church had their home destroyed by a tornado that struck the farming community last Wednesday, and the wife of Midwest Conference Superintendent Ken Carlson escaped injury as a tornado passed over the couple\u2019s Omaha home early Sunday morning. He was not at home at the time.

\nThe Ceresco family had just arrived home when the sirens sounded. \u201cIt came so fast, it caught everyone by surprise,\u201d says Jodi Moore, pastor of Ceresco Covenant.<\/p>\n
The family was able to find shelter in the basement before the twister struck. They are now living in a hotel.<\/p>\n
Horse barns and sheds on the property of several other families also were destroyed by at least one of two tornadoes, but no other injuries were reported, Moore says. Power remained out for three days, but was restored in time for the Sunday worship service.<\/p>\n
The church was going to meet even if the power was still out, Moore says. The building did sustain minor damage from winds and baseball-size hail.<\/p>\n
In Omaha, \u201cNancy woke up just as (the tornado) went over the top of the house and veered to the northeast,\u201d says Carlson. Neighbors had stepped outside and then hurried back indoors when they heard the characteristic \u201ctrain\u201d sound.<\/p>\n
The home suffered no damage, but numerous others in the city were hard hit. According to news reports, roughly 500 homes were damaged, but there were no deaths. Covenant churches reported minor or no damage, the superintendent says.<\/p>\n
Flooding was causing some activities to be postponed at Covenant Cedars Bible Camp in Hordville, Nebraska, Carlson notes, with flooding reported in numerous areas.<\/p>\n
