BEIJING, CHINA (May 19, 2008) \u2013 A call for prayer on behalf of individuals and families in China, who continue to suffer in the aftermath of last week\u2019s massive earthquake, was issued today by Dave and Judy Dolan, regional co-coordinators for China in the Department of World Mission of the Evangelical Covenant Church.

\nIn an email update this morning from Beijing, Dave Dolan reports a somber mood throughout the country as a three-day mourning period begins.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday, at 2:38 in the afternoon, just one week after the terrible earthquake struck in northern Sichuan Province, the people of China began a three-day mourning period,\u201d Dolan writes. \u201cI am in Beijing today due to a delayed flight. After the initial three minutes of silence that started the three-day mourning period, horns and sirens around the city sounded in memory of those who died. To date there are some 34,000 confirmed deaths with many still buried in the rubble.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dolan cites China’s swift response, noting the government has been open about the great loss that has been experienced. \u201cDoctors from Evergreen in Taiyuan will be traveling to the earthquake scene as will others we know who can help,\u201d Dolan says.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease remember the families who have been devastated by this great loss,\u201d he asks. \u201cRemember, too, the many thousands who are now without housing and fresh water. The rainy season is fast approaching. Pray for wisdom and safety for all those involved in recovery efforts. There are many who are still dealing with the fear that settles in for a while after such a traumatic event.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease remember our friends in Gansu. Pray that God’s love will be poured out on those suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n
The CNN online news service today confirms the death toll in worst-hit Sichuan Province in southwestern China rose to at least 34,073 with another 245,109 people hurt, citing Chinese government sources. Authorities estimate the final death toll could reach 50,000, while millions more people have been left homeless by the disaster.<\/p>\n
Officials also report that at least 200 rescue workers have been buried by mud slides during the past three days.<\/p>\n
