NORTH MANKATO, MN (February 19, 2008) \u2013 A van carrying eight students and two adult leaders from the Evangelical Covenant Church overturned near Rush City around 11 a.m. Monday morning, leaving one teenager with a concussion and others with minor bruises, says Roger Gilbert, associate pastor of outreach and care.

The group was returning from a ski retreat at Spirit Mountain in Duluth when a gust of wind caught the equipment trailer being pulled by the van, Gilbert says. The force of the wind gust on the trailer forced the van into a ditch on the right side of the road where the vehicle rolled \u201cone or two times.\u201d<\/p>\n
The use of seatbelts is credited with helping to prevent more serious injuries – the adult driver had instructed everyone to fasten their seatbelts when the group left Duluth.\u00a0 \u201cWe believe that this, along with God\u2019s grace, is responsible for protecting the occupants from serious injury,\u201d Gilbert says.<\/p>\n
Off-duty emergency medical technicians stopped at the scene to help, as did passing motorists. All of the passengers were examined at the scene, and none were taken to the hospital, says Gilbert, who was not on the trip.<\/p>\n
Occupants of a second van that was following the tow vehicle saw the accident unfold \u2013 a frightening experience, Gilbert notes.<\/p>\n
The group gathered at a local restaurant to call home and wait for other transportation. Two passenger vans were sent to pick up the teens and adults, who returned home about 8 p.m. Monday. The church is continuing to care for all who were involved, Gilbert says.<\/p>\n
