FARMINGTON HILLS, MI (December 15, 2009) – The Santa Lucia Festival at Faith Covenant Church<\/a> drew three weeks of coverage in the community\u2019s newspaper.
\n
\n\"Lucia\"St. Lucia Day commemorates the martyr who was killed for bringing food to persecuted Christians in the catacombs. The saint wore candles on her head to light the way through the darkness of the tunnels. She serves as a symbol of service and light.<\/p>\n

The three-part series highlighted the church\u2019s preparations as well as activities on the day of the event, which is a Swedish tradition. The church\u2019s popular event included three breakfast sittings, each with its own Lucia portrayed by high school seniors. The morning also featured various musical performances, youth dancers, and a Christmas shop.<\/p>\n

One of the Lucias, Kristin Carlson, was happy to play the role, but added she was relieved when the event was over. \u201cI was in total darkness and couldn’t see.\u201d<\/p>\n

She noted, \u201cThe biggest challenge is not tilting your head if you don’t want to get wax in your hair.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Christmas shop is stocked with food and gifts – the church also has as a \u201crecycle shop\u201d of gently used Christmas decorations. Proceeds from the recycle shop are used to purchase Christmas gifts for children whose parents are incarcerated.<\/p>\n

Nancy Bergstrom, who started the tradition at the church 30 years ago, says, \u201cIt’s a community outreach. It’s a multi-generational event, which is so rare. Everyone wants to have a part.\u201d<\/p>\n
