{"id":122,"date":"2009-01-29T19:58:09","date_gmt":"2009-01-29T19:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/?p=122"},"modified":"2010-12-22T13:11:36","modified_gmt":"2010-12-22T18:11:36","slug":"6841","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/2009\/01\/29\/6841\/","title":{"rendered":"Aaron Barg: A Brief Life, a Profound Imprint"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LIBERTYVILLE, IL (January 29, 2009) \u2013 Susan Barg remains overwhelmed by the number of people who attended the visitation and memorial service this week for her 18-year-old son, Aaron, who died Friday.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.covchurch.org\/uploads\/e5\/ho\/e5hoIZQ8F6VpjWlzWK5tHQ\/Barg-3.jpg\" alt=\"Barg\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" align=\"left\" \/>\u201cI turned around at the memorial service, and I said to Steve, \u2018Look at all the lives he touched in 18 years without even speaking.\u2019 He never said a word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barg, who had a rare genetic condition, wasn\u2019t expected to survive beyond a couple of months, but his life inspired not only a congregation, but countless of others around the country as well.<\/p>\n<p>He was born with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/medlineplus\/ency\/article\/001660.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Trisomy<\/a> 13, a condition in which an extra 13th chromosome is present that left him with a weakened heart and lungs and brain damage. He also was deaf and legally blind. Doctors told Steve and Susan that he would never speak, walk, or feed himself.<\/p>\n<p>Susan estimated that 600 people attended the visitation on Monday. It initially was scheduled for 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. but was extended two hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people waited in line two to two and a half hours,\u201d Susan says. \u201cI had never even met some of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, roughly 500 people attended his memorial service at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libcov.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Libertyville Covenant Church<\/a>, where the family attends. Attendees had to be shuttled from the parking lot of a nearby Lutheran congregation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.covchurch.org\/uploads\/3o\/Wb\/3oWbAveHtKNJAODBMyq6RQ\/Barg-1.jpg\" alt=\"Child\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" align=\"right\" \/>The people wore bright-colored clothing, as the Bargs requested. \u201cWe wanted the service to be a celebration of his life,\u201d Susan says.<\/p>\n<p>The Bargs had made a point of celebrating the life of Aaron, who had several nicknames, including Bud. Nearly every year, they threw a birthday \u201cBudster Bash\u201d at which up to 150 people attended.<\/p>\n<p>His sister, Hannah, 15, had unknowingly bestowed on him the nickname Bubba when she was little because she couldn\u2019t say \u201cbrother.\u201d Each of the birthday events was themed, so for his 18th birthday this year, the family put up the website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bubbaforpresident.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bubba for President<\/a>. The site has pictures and videos of his life and even includes his qualifications and platform.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2005 Covenant Companion article, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.covchurch.org\/companion\/articles\/2005-august-confirming-aaron#snO3NxjexrygzzhtUxUHRg\" target=\"_blank\">Confirming Aaron<\/a>,\u201d Steve told author Bob Smietana that after getting over the initial grief, \u201cWe realized early on that Aaron is on a mission from God to change people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He accomplished that mission, leaving an indelible mark on those around him \u2013 not despite, but because, of his severe handicaps.<\/p>\n<p>Bill Fish, director of ministry at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpbc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Covenant Point Bible Camp<\/a>, says Aaron actually seemed to have a gift of knowing when people needed empathy. \u201cIt was like he could process things beyond our cognitive abilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He tells of how Aaron understood the needs of a camper before anyone else did. On the first day of camp, Aaron was in worship with the adults. He could sense light and dark enough so that he was able to move his wheelchair around the room \u2013 which he did during the service.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.covchurch.org\/uploads\/DQ\/Rk\/DQRkqGsvvMfQh04wu4RiTQ\/Barg-2.jpg\" alt=\"Family\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" align=\"left\" \/>\u201cHe\u2019s just wheeling and wheeling around and then he came to an older woman and just stopped,\u201d Fish says. \u201cThen he held out his arms to hug her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At that point, no one knew that her husband had died just weeks earlier. She later told Fish, \u201cI was really needing a hug then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe represented the ideal child of faith,\u201d says Libertyville Associate Pastor Brian Zahasky. \u201cHe was clearly a light, a real gracious personality. He had an unassuming character that drew people together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Going \u201cnose-to-nose\u201d with Aaron was an incredible experience, says Fish. He explains that in order to communicate with Aaron, it was virtually necessary to put heads together so the young man could see.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe just lit up,\u201d Fish says. \u201cHe would just be euphoric because you entered his world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although some people wonder how they would handle being parents of a severely disabled child, Susan says, \u201cDespite all his difficulties, he made it easy to be a mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the recent gatherings were celebrations of Aaron\u2019s life, Susan knows the accompanying grief will last for some time, but is certain the family will carry on his \u201cmission from God to change people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.covchurch.org\/cov\/news\/item5203\" target=\"_blank\">Click here<\/a> to read a previous Covenant News Service story on how Susan ran marathons to raise money to benefit Aaron and other people with severe handicaps.<\/p>\n<p>The family suggests memorial gifts be directed to the Philip J.
