ATLANTA, GA (September 24, 2009) \u2013 Pastor Shaun King used Facebook and Twitter to attract members when he started the Courageous Church<\/a> last year. Now he is using social media to organize flood relief for families affected by severe flooding this week.<\/p>\n

Courageous Church, a Covenant church plant, launched a website, Bringing Hope to Atlanta<\/a>, through which people can donate funds and volunteer to help with relief work. Volunteers can enlist to clean, assist with moving, or help collect, organize, and distribute donations. The site also lists other churches where people can drop off donations.<\/p>\n

Floods this week killed at least nine people and cost more than $250 million in estimated damages. Thousands have been left homeless.<\/p>\n

The flooding resulted from nearly 20 inches of rain falling within 35 hours on Sunday and Monday. Although waters have receded in many areas, waters could still be seen as high as some rooftops today.<\/p>\n

King, who calls himself \u201cThe Facebook Pastor,\u201d attracted national media attention when he used social media to start the church last January. Even before the church launched, King and the congregation used the networks to receive donations from across the country and overseas to provide Christmas gifts for children at an Atlanta school.<\/p>\n
