{"id":10335,"date":"2007-10-12T09:53:43","date_gmt":"2007-10-12T14:53:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/?p=10335"},"modified":"2011-08-09T09:54:42","modified_gmt":"2011-08-09T14:54:42","slug":"5878","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/2007\/10\/12\/5878\/","title":{"rendered":"Palmberg: Child Insurance Protection a \u2018Moral Issue\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CHICAGO, IL (October 12, 2007) \u2013 Providing health insurance for  children throughout the United States goes beyond mere compassion \u2013 it  is a moral issue, says Evangelical Covenant Church President Glenn  Palmberg in an online interview this week with a reporter from the <em>Roundtable on Religion and Social Welfare Policy<\/em>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10336\" title=\"Palmberg\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/08\/Palmberg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" \/>Palmberg  was asked to address questions surrounding the State Children&#8217;s Health  Insurance Program (SCHIP), which Congress voted to reauthorize, but  President Bush vetoed. Lobbying efforts are under way with certain  members of Congress to secure enough support to sustain a veto override  vote in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, approved by Congress with bipartisan  support, would expand SCHIP to cover an estimated 10 million children \u2013  some 6.6 million children are currently covered by medical insurance.<\/p>\n<p>The  measure would provide $60 billion over the next five years, $35 billion  more than current spending and $30 billion more than the president  proposed. The President and his supporters argue that the bill would be a  step toward federalization of health care, and that it would steer the  program away from its core purpose of providing insurance for poor  children and toward covering children from middle-class families,  according to a <em>New York Times<\/em> article.<\/p>\n<p>The program was to  expire on September 30, but financing for it has been continued through a  stopgap spending bill that will be in effect through mid-November.<\/p>\n<p>In  response to a question on why religious organizations are speaking out  on this particular issue, Palmberg observed, \u201cWhen an issue like this  comes up, there&#8217;s not an opportunity to take a vote in the Evangelical  Covenant Church. So I speak for myself. I can&#8217;t speak for the individual  churches. For an evangelical denomination, we&#8217;re fairly involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere  are some groups that have no advocacy unless the churches become  advocates,\u201d Palmberg told reporter Anne Farris in Monday\u2019s interview.  \u201cThat&#8217;s why I think it&#8217;s important that the church express itself when  it&#8217;s an issue that we think has moral implications.
