Born in Chicago December 17, 1916, Lovain completed studies at Messiah College in 1939 and graduated from North Park Theological Seminary in 1943. He was ordained as a Covenant minister by the Annual Meeting in 1945 in Jamestown, New York.
He served an internship at the Covenant church in Park Falls, Wisconsin, and was pastor of Country Evangelical Covenant Church in Elgin until April 1944. He later served pastorates in Pilot Mound, Iowa; Bradford, Pennsylvania; Loveland, Colorado; Scottsbluff, Nebraska; Cloquet, Minnesota; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Wausa, Nebraska; and Upsala, Minnesota, according to ministerial records.
