WHEATON, IL (November 11, 2004) – Austin Person of First Covenant Church in Omaha, Nebraska, recorded his fifth shutout as the North Park University (NPU) men’s soccer team defeated Wheaton College 2-0 last Saturday night in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) playoff finals.

Person, a sophomore goalie, had eight saves, many of them in spectacular fashion, as the Vikings got two goals from P.J. Eriksson for all of its offense. One of Eriksson’s goals was assisted by Adam Johnson, who grew up at Community Covenant Church in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

With the victory, coach John Born’s team finished 14-3-2 on the season and narrowly missed getting its first invitation to the NCAA Division III men’s soccer playoffs. Wheaton (17-4) earned the NCAA playoff berth for the CCIW by virtue of a 7-0 regular season mark in a points system format. North Park was 4-2-1 in regular season play and lost to Wheaton 1-0 on October 5.

In other NPU athletics news:

  • Junior outside hitter Shannon Zoll earned All-CCIW Honorable mention in volleyball after the Vikings finished a 9-29 season with three losses last weekend at the conference tourney.
  • Mike Haehn connected on two touchdown throws to Jon Harris as NPU lost 56-14 at Wheaton College last Saturday in a conference football game. The Vikings are now 1-8 overall, 0-6 in CCIW play, heading into Saturday’s 1 p.m. finale against visiting North Central College.
