MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA (December, 1998) – Assistance is needed in the aftermath of a fire that seriously damaged the Girls’ Home in Medellin, Colombia, according to reports received by the Evangelical Covenant Church Department of World Mission office.
Arson is suspected, according to Nancy Reed, director for Latin America. It is believed the fire originated in the Covenant Kids office, destroying most of the furniture and other contents of the office as well as creating smoke damage in the second floor of the structure.
“Sadly enough, they had just compiled the financial reports for the year,” Reed noted. “They are all gone. Everything is covered with smoke and ashes.”
Reed said the loss was not covered by insurance and assistance is being sought to help with cleanup and restoration of the office. All of the residents were attending a service in the main area of the building at the time and no one was injured, Reed reported. Director of the home is Marlene Roman.
