CHICAGO, IL (December 11, 2001) – Senior Mark Safstrom of First Covenant Church in Seattle, Washington, has been awarded the Student Laureate Medallion by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois for overall excellence during his college career at North Park University.
Safstrom, a member of the North Park men’s cross-country team, is a resident assistant at the school and is active in outreach ministries, according to Gary Ireland, Dean of Student Development. Safstrom is also a student senator at North Park, representing the senior class and the student association.
The Student Medallion is given annually to one member from the senior class of each four-year institution of higher learning in Illinois. The award comes with a $150 honorarium.
North Park is one of 49 colleges and universities participating in the program. The award is unique among the 50 states and was established 36 years ago to honor the state’s most distinguished citizens with the highest award in Illinois, the Order of Lincoln (named for President Abraham Lincoln). Candidates for the Student Laureate must have a grade point average higher than 3.75 and be involved in extracurricular activities and student leadership, said Ireland.
