CHICAGO, IL (December 6, 2005) – Viking Bjorn Berg has been named College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Player of the Week for his outstanding performance that led the team to two victories last week.
On Tuesday, Berg put in several three pointers in the last two minutes, including one with seven seconds left, to guide the Vikings to a 76-75 victory of Judson College. Primarily a junior varsity player, Berg scored a career high 22 points.
He topped that two nights later with a career high 28 points. He sank four of five free throws in the last 33 seconds against Concordia (Wisconsin) to give the Vikings an 81-80 win.
“He was well-deserving,” says head Coach Paul Brenegan. “It’s encouraging to see, especially as a senior stepping up his game.”
Berg was the first Viking named Player of the Week in at least three years. He shared the honor with Rick Harrigan of Augustana.
The Viking women’s basketball team improved their record to 4-3 after winning two at home over the weekend.
On Friday night, the Lady Vikings topped St. Mary’s 55-49 in a game in which neither team had a lead of more than eight points. Top scorers for North Park were Megan Slattery with 15 and Shandrel Young with 12. Slattery also pulled down nine rebounds.
North Park defeated Concordia 51-40 Saturday afternoon. The 11-point margin was the largest of the day. The teams were within six points of each other for most of the afternoon. Laura Mount led the Vikings with 12 points, and Young scored 10. Young also led the team with 6 rebounds.
The Vikings next play the University of Chicago in a 2 p.m. Saturday contest at home.
