“David’s doing better than doctors had hoped for,” Wally said this morning.
Doctors removed David from a respirator today, but he still is listed in critical condition at Poudre Valley Hospital, where he remains in the intensive care unit, Wally said.
David, 28, was walking home from a party when he was shot. Police had a difficult time finding him because he had run 100 yards before collapsing, Wally said.
Doctors told David’s parents that he had come within 10 minutes of dying due to blood loss – he had no blood pressure when he arrived at the hospital, Wally said. The human body contains approximately 5 liters of blood, and doctors went through 11 while saving David’s life.
The .45 caliber bullet broke a rib and passed through his lung, but did not hit any other organs, Wally said. He underwent surgery on Monday.
Nancy and Wally had just returned home on Sunday to Massachusetts, after spending a week of vacation with David. They returned to Colorado on Monday.
“We are thankful for everyone’s prayers,” Wally said. Nancy is the pastor of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Indian Orchard, Massachusetts.
According to reports, the shooter called police, but details of the incident remain sketchy, and no one has been arrested.
