KARAWA, CONGO (August 3, 2006) – Electricity from the Zulu Hydrodam Plant is once again flowing to the hospital in Karawa, thanks to a joint generator rebuilding project by the Covenant Church of Congo (CEUM) and the Paul Carlson Partnership (PCP).

Electricity stopped flowing from the Zulu plant five months ago when the only working turbo generator failed and was shut down to avoid the risk of flooding the generator room and endangering the lives of workers.

CEUM President Mossai Sanguma was in the United States, attending the Midwinter Pastors Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church, when he received news of the generator failure.

After it was determined that the failed generator was beyond repair, a second two-ton turbo generator, damaged years ago by a lightening strike, was transported 200 miles to Bangui to have the alternator rewound. The repaired generator was then reinstalled at the Zulu station.

The repaired generator, which began producing a limited amount of electricity for Karawa late Tuesday, is part of a multi-year phased-in rebuilding of the Zulu plant. To learn more about the Zulu project or to contribute to the rebuilding effort, please visit the Covenant website and select the Paul Carlson Partnership link under the “Outreach Ministries” tab at the top of the home page.

“This is good news after five months without electricity,” says President Sanguma in an emailed message to Jim Sundholm, PCP executive director. “I want to express my sincere thanks for your unceasing support toward our needs. The patients at Karawa Hospital are rejoicing now.”
