CHICAGO, IL (September 13, 2006) – The final total is in: Covenant youth attending this year’s CHIC event in Tennessee, along with those donating online, contributed $101,772.86 – an amount even greater than the total announced in July.

“Just as exciting as the amount given is the fact that work on new toilets and a kitchen for the new school in Bentiu, Sudan, has already begun,” Jim Sundholm told Covenant News Service this morning. That work is expected to be completed in about six weeks.

Sundholm also announced a surprise development that has come about because of the donations from CHIC youth and the work it is funding in Bentiu. The World Food Organization has pledged grain for the food program portion of the Bentiu project, now that a new kitchen is being built. “It is wonderful to see how one move forward often stimulates other responses,” Sundholm noted.

The food organization no doubt was influenced in part by the work of CHIC youth in packing more than half a million meals as part of the CHIC experience in Knoxville, food that was shipped before the CHIC conference had even concluded. “The group basically said that given the work by the CHIC youth in packing the meals, along with the new kitchen to handle food preparation, they can move ahead with the donation of grain to the program,” Sundholm said.

“The CHIC young people accomplished even more than they may have thought they did at the time,” Sundholm observed.
