BIRMINGHAM, AL (September 12, 2006) – The following photos were taken during a 2002 Sankofa trip by members of the Council of Administrators of the Evangelical Covenant Church, focusing on the 16th Street Baptist Church.
A colorful mosaic of stained glass greets visitors passing through this entrance of the historic 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, where four young girls tragically died in an explosion during the Civil Rights movement.
This is a rare glimpse from behind the pulpit at the historic 16th Street Baptist Church, the view that famed civil rights activist and preacher Dr. Martin Luther King junior would have seen when he preached from this very spot.
This plaque is one of many artifacts depicting the history of the 16th Street Baptist Church, which played a significant role in the Civil Rights movement and is included in most Sankofa journeys by the Evangelical Covenant Church.
