CHICAGO, IL (December 12, 2006) – Evangelical Covenant Church President Glenn Palmberg praised the U.S. Senate for passing the Hunger-Free Communities Act (S. 1120) Monday, though the bill will not become law as the U.S. House of Representatives failed to take action on a similar measure.
The bill, had it been approved, would have required the Secretary of Agriculture to report on hunger in the United States and recommend a comprehensive strategy to reduce hunger. The bill also would have provided grants to religious and community groups that are working together to overcome hunger at local levels.

“The Senate has done the country a great service in passing the Hunger-Free Communities Act,” Palmberg said. “This bill has the potential of making better and healthier lives for the 35 million Americans who have a hard time putting food on the table.”
Lead sponsors for S. 1120 included Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL), Richard Lugar (R-IN), Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), and Gordon Smith (R-OR).
Bread for the World, an anti-hunger and poverty group of which the Covenant is a participant, helped lead the campaign to approve the legislation.
