Jeweliann Houlette had decided to do her school research project on the education of females in developing countries. She also planned to do a charity concert to raise funds to help with educating young women, but she had difficulty finding an organization that was involved in this kind of ministry, says David Husby, who with his wife, Ronna, serve as regional coordinators for Asia in the Department of World Mission.
Houlette subsequently learned of the Educate the Girls initiative, which helps provide the necessary funding for high school girls in Congo to pay the fee to take the final exam that allows them to continue their education. The program is operated in partnership with the Congo Evangelical Covenant Church (CEUM). To read a 2004 online news story about the program, please see “Educate the Girls.”
Houlette showed a short clip of the project from the DVD produced by Women Ministries at a student chapel two days before the charity concert. At the May 4th concert, she introduced the Educate the Girls project and showed a longer clip of the DVD.
