BUFFALO, NY (March 24, 2009) – Buffalo Covenant Church is making sure area families hit hard by the economy have the opportunity for an evening out  – they can get a good meal and play games, with tutoring for the children and support for the parents.

Every Wednesday night, a handful of volunteers from the 110-year-old church provide a free hot meal, or as the church website bills it, “home cooking without the muss or fuss!”

Tutoring is available on a variety of subjects. One of the tutors told a local television news station that one girl gets assistance because both parents are deaf. “Simple things like vowel sounds are so hard to learn when you have two deaf parents,” she says. The church also provides free recreation that includes foosball and ping-pong. Parents can participate in a support group. A clothes closet also is available.

Volunteers are eager to help the families – many of them earn too much money to qualify for government assistance, but barely have enough to live on. “I’ve been blessed with a good job and a fine family and everything,” said Nick VanHeeren. “We all have a responsibility to help each other out.”

The reporter concluded her report by noting that the church is “a place you can count on every Wednesday night.”
