Henoch Fuentes is pastor of Eagle Sports Ministries, which is sponsoring a commemorative soccer tournament on Saturday to honor Elgin and Bartlett firefighters as well as Salvation Army volunteers.
The tournament – the September 11 Cup – will begin at 1 p.m. on the soccer field at Elgin Bible Church, 1580 E. Chicago Street. Trophies will be awarded to firefighters and volunteers as part of that event in recognition for their services.
The eight-game soccer tournament will involve dozens of children from Elgin, Carpentersville, Aurora and Joliet, according to a report in the Elgin Courier News.
Soccer provides a way to keep at-risk children off the streets and involved in the community, the Courier News quotes Fuentes as saying. Fuentes forms soccer teams that scrimmage against each other on a regular basis throughout the year. They play indoors at the Salvation Army facility or at the Grace Evangelical Church gym. Fuentes started the ministry four years ago.
