CHICAGO, IL (January 7, 2008) – Hardly a week goes by that we do not receive a few comments from readers on stories published as part of the Covenant online news report.

We will share from time to time some of those responses generated through the “comments” link attached to each published story. This kind of feedback is very helpful to our Covenant News Service staff as we seek to identify and publish stories of great interest to a broad spectrum of online readers of this report.

Following are comments relating to recently published stories, edited in some cases for length. To read a particular story of interest, click on the headline.

Funeral Service Wednesday for Don Peres

Rod and Pam Darsie of Cambridge, MN, write: We are sad to hear of Don Peres’ death. He will always be remembered by us as a great preacher of God’s word. It was our hope to some day be one of his parishioners.

Robert & Yvonne Huse of Strathmore, AB, write: Don was such a blessing to so many people. Please give our condolences to Pat.

Brenda Burruss Kennedy of Duluth, MN, writes: Pastor Don was no ordinary pastor. I had no idea what an impact he would make on my life when I first met him. He and Patty were so devoted to each other and the Lord. He always had time for me when I would call with questions or to ask for prayer. He will truly be missed here on this earth. I will be seeing him, of that I am sure, and I know that he will be singing and praising. And for those who knew pastor Don, they know that too.

Unique Bicycle Ministry Tackling Poverty in Zambia

Mark Washington of Chicago, IL, writes: Thanks for this story. This is one of many ways God is using business to advance his Kingdom around the world, especially in places that won’t accept traditional missionaries. Intervarsity hosted a major Business as Mission Conference last year with free audios available. I know the Evangelical Covenant Church has been doing “business as mission” for years – in Thailand, at Jesus People USA (JPUSA) and others. It’s exciting to see.

Greg West of San Diego, CA, writes: Vaughn and Dustin are an inspiration to all of us as they use their gifts, skills and education to restore and build God’s kingdom on earth. Many people have written off this generation as being self-absorbed and lazy. These two are certainly an exception to that assessment. May God raise up many more disciples like these young men whose passion it is to make a difference in the world!

One Family, 113 Years of Consecutive Pulpit Ministry

Bonnie Hansen of Auburn, CA, writes: What a wonderful article about my cousin Kent. As Herbert Palmquist’s daughter, I can affirm so many things he said. It was a rich heritage to be born into the Palmquist family and more so into the family of God. Blessings on you, Kent.

Betty Thompson of Everett, WA, writes: Kent Palmquist spent some of his growing up years at First Covenant in Spokane. His father was pastor during my confirmation years. What I remember about Kent and his sister was that they were “model” preacher’s kids! So happy to read his story.

Unusual Mosaic Art Designed to Enhance Worship

Terry Peterson of Grand Rapids, MI, writes: What amazing mosaics and what a fantastic “new” way to worship. This is a great ministry and one that makes us all think “outside the box.” Keep up the great work and I hope we see updates as each new tile is introduced this year!

The Gift That Keeps on Giving

Katherine Martinez of Loveland, CO, writes: This is a beautiful story. You helped me think about gifts and giving in a new way.

Jackson Retiring After 30 Years as SCH Chaplain

Roger Nelson of Chicago, IL, writes: Steve Jackson – what a tremendous colleague! “Quiet waters run deep.” That is so descriptive of Steve: gracious and gifted, dependable and consistent, a keeper of confidentiality, ever appropriate and insightful, a true friend. Steve, for years you have provided great leadership. Welcome to the ranks of the retired with many good and meaningful years ahead!

The Faces of Relief

Will Carson of Belfast, Ireland, writes: The faces appear more to be of humiliation than anything else. Forcing an old man to hold up a poster of support for a God he doesn’t understand is very sad indeed.

Identity Quest Spawns Adoption Support Ministry

Charles Duncan of Garland, TX, writes: Thanks for enlightening me on adoption (adoptees and birth parents) groups. I am about to propose such a group within our church and am gathering information. I was well aware of Moses being adopted (found), but now I can include Ester, Joseph and Samuel!

Minnesota Church Seeks to Blend Cultures

Selena Salcedo of Minneapolis, MN, writes: I am looking for a Spanish-speaking Christian church in the Metro area for my mother-in-law, who just moved in with us. Since this is a ministry that you offered, I wondered if you could offer any local referrals for us? Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide.

(Editor’s note: efforts have been made to connect the family with a local congregation. Other suggestions may be emailed to newsdesk@covchurch.org and will be forwarded to the writer.)

Sankofans Explore Slavery’s Past in Mount Bayou

Leon Frazier of Tuskegee, AL, writes: Excellent endeavor. It will take these kinds of discoveries, testimonials and reports to heal what ails America and the world.
