CHICAGO, IL (October 2, 2009) – This past summer, Bob McFadden, the youth pastor at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Lafayette, Indiana, set out on the road – literally – to figure out what and who the Covenant is.

CoverMcFadden was enrolled in the Covenant orientation program to become credentialed as a Covenant minister when he decided to explore the denomination as part of a road trip he had previously scheduled. Along the way, he visited six Covenant churches in five states and learned some surprising lessons. His story is the cover article of the October issue of The Covenant Companion.

In other articles:

•    The Van Dyk family of Ocean Hills Covenant Church in Santa Barbara, California, said goodbye to their father last year in a unique way. “Constructing a Family Farewell” tells the story of how they celebrated Al Van Dyk’s life by joining together on a project none of them anticipated.

•    “When Self Takes Center Stage” continues the new series by Karl Clifton-Soderstrom about vices and virtues. This month, Clifton-Soderstrom asks, “Is pride a vice or a virtue?” He explores how pride hardly seems sinful in some circumstances. “What about the pride a parent has for a child? The pride citizens take in their nation? Black pride? Is it wrong to be proud to be a Christian?” Clifton-Soderstrom is an assistant professor of philosophy and the director of general education at North Park University in Chicago.

•    Doug Bixby interviews author Kevin Roose, whose new book, The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner’s Semester at America’s Holiest University, chronicles the months he spent undercover at a conservative evangelical university. Bixby is pastor of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Attleboro, Massachusetts.
