SPRING VALLEY, CA, (October 25, 2007) – Residents evacuated Monday night from Mount Miguel Covenant Village returned to the Covenant Retirement Community this afternoon, administrators said.

Administrators still were awaiting approval from appropriate licensing agencies to return other residents to the skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. They had been evacuated to other care centers in the city. Some residents elected to go with family members in the area.

Thad Rothrock, executive director of Mount Miguel, had hoped to return the residents to the retirement community earlier in the day, but authorities had determined the area could not yet be reoccupied.

Local media reported that a resident died during the original evacuation Monday night, but administrators say the report was misleading. The death of the assisted-living resident occurred while everyone was still on the campus and was unrelated to the evacuation, they explained.

Security personnel who had remained on the Mount Miguel campus reported that no damage had occurred. Some staff members earlier had returned to the campus to prepare for the return of residents.

Alpine Camp and Conference Center also has escaped damage, according to its website.

“We have had many professional fire fighting and law enforcement friends stop by Alpine to let us know that Alpine has been spared from the fires,” according to a post on the website.”
