CHICAGO, IL (October 2, 2007) – A committee has been formed to nominate a candidate to the 2008 Annual Meeting for the office of president of the Evangelical Covenant Church.

Following this year’s Annual Meeting in Portland, President Glenn R. Palmberg announced that he will retire in September next year – before completion of his third term – after having served ten years in the position.

When a vacancy occurs in the office of president, the Constitution and Bylaws requires formation of a Presidential Nominating Committee, which is charged with conducting a search and nominating one individual to stand for election at the following Annual Meeting.

The Executive Board directed formation of a search process after Palmberg advised the board of his decision in June. A nominating committee was assembled in accordance with provisions of the Constitution and Bylaws, to include twelve members of the Executive Board, ten conference chairpersons, and representatives of five administrative and affiliated boards.

The 27-member committee will conduct an organizational meeting October 19, select a chairperson and draft details of the search process, including the manner in which interested individuals can submit their names for consideration or others can recommend names of those they believe would be qualified candidates.

In preparation for that meeting, a means has been created to accommodate those who would like to share their observations with the nominating committee, including qualities they would like to see in a candidate. Messages can be mailed in a sealed envelope to the Presidential Nominating Committee, 5101 N. Francisco Avenue, Chicago, IL, 60625, or may be emailed to Presidential Nominating Committee.

All messages will be collected by Chrissy Palmerlee, who is responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all submissions and forwarding them to the nominating committee chairperson.
