Final details of the contract have yet to be completed, says team owner Randy Lerner.
Holmgren, considered by many to be one of the best minds in football, will assume the task of turning around a franchise that has been mired in mediocrity for years.
Holmgren coached the Green Bay Packers to two Super Bowls, winning one against the New England Patriots in 1997. He later led the Seattle Seahawks to a National Football Conference championship in the 2005 season, before losing Super Bowl XL to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Holmgren spent 22 years – from 1986 to 2008 – as a coach in the National Football League, first as a quarterback coach and offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, then as a head coach for the Packers and Seahawks.
Kathy Holmgren is a North Park University alumna and former member of the university’s Board of Trustees. All four of the couple’s children attended North Park University. The Holmgrens have been long-time benefactors of the school.
