TURLOCK, CA (September 14, 2009) – Services are pending for retired Evangelical Covenant Church Missionary Lucille Johnson, 88, who died Friday.

She was born February 5, 1921, in Dawson, Minnesota. Johnson received a bachelor’s degree from St. Cloud State Teachers’ College in 1947 and graduated from North Park Bible Institute in 1950.

She married Gordon Johnson on June 23, 1950. He preceded her in death.

The Covenant Annual Meeting called the couple in 1951 to be missionaries to Japan. They developed the Chigasaki Covenant Church, but also helped begin an evangelism outreach in the neighboring city of Fujisawa.

The couple founded the Odawara Christian Center, which opened in Odawara, Japan, in 1976. Gordon served as director, and Lucille filled the position following his death in 1982.

Covenant News Service will publish additional information as it becomes available.
