CHICAGO, IL (April 17, 2009) – The Central Conference has partnered with Pastor Terry Allen and Elim Covenant Church in Elim, Alaska.

The conference is relaying contributions from individual churches since last year, says Superintendent Jerome Nelson. The church can use the money at its discretion.

“We’re trying to update the parsonage by installing an instant hot water system,” says Allen. “It runs on propane because we’re trying to avoid astronomical electrical fees.”

As of the 2000 Census, there were 313 people – 84 households and 69 families – residing in the city.

Money doesn’t stretch as far as in the continental United States, Allen says. “Gasoline is $7.59 a gallon up here, and food is four times the cost in the 48 (lower states).” As a result, his church has been able to raise only 50 percent of the budget so far.

He knows times are hard for other churches as well and that making the decision to give to Elim can be difficult. “In this economy, it is really hard for the churches to give out more,” Allen says. “Because of the economy, everyone is afraid, which is understandable.”

In addition to funneling funds through the conference office, congregations also have partnered directly with Elim. Allen recently traveled for six weeks and visited 39 churches to raise support and make connections.

“The people we met in the Central Conference welcomed us with open arms,” Allen says.

While support from the Central conference has been a great help, many needs remain, says Allen, who has served the community for four years. The average stay for a non-native pastor in Norton Sound is 18 months.

Nelson says it is important that the conference continue its support. “For me, we’re all part of the Evangelical Covenant Church. One of our sister churches needs help, and the conference is able to meet the need. It’s mission giving.”
