The program serves about 60 children. The church runs a traditional VBS in the morning but, in the afternoon, embarks on field trips to places like the beach, New England Aquarium, Boston Museum of Science, Franklin Park Zoo, and city pools. They also provide home-cooked meals.
The church needs additional volunteers to serve as activity leaders, activity helpers, crew leaders, crew helpers, and field trip chaperones. The church also will pay a stipend to an assistant director.
“We raise about $10,000 in private donations primarily from givers outside the church to provide a high-quality and low-cost program,” says youth pastor Christina Tinglof. Donations help cover the cost of buses for the field trips and entrance fees to various sites, as well as a group that teaches children African dance and drumming. The church operates a carnival on the final day.
