Smith was born Sept. 22, 1928, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. She married Lincoln Smith on June 7, 1947. He was a Covenant pastor for 40 years and served seven churches across the United States, where she also contributed her ministry gifts, including music and teaching. Together they served First Covenant Church of Cheyene, Wyoming; Evangelical Covenant Church of Antioch, California; Neighborhood Covenant Church, of Rosemead, California; Evangelical Covenant Church of Aberdeen, Washington; First Covenant Church of Spokane, Washington; Calvary Covenant Church of Erie, Pennsylvania; and Marquette Covenant Church of Marquette, Kansas.
Had her brother, Darrell, not needed a day-bed, Smith’s musical gifts might never have been developed. Her parents had gone to the store to buy a bed, but the salesman heard the seven-year-old girl playing a piano in the business. When the parents informed him that she had never played the piano before, he suggested they purchase the instrument rather than the bed. (Darrell wound up on the cot for a while longer.) She learned to sight read by sitting in the family car with a hymnal and singing each part.
In addition to her husband, Smith is survived by three children: Wesley, Stanley, and Jennifer.
