CHICAGO, IL (December 4, 2006) – Separate articles by two North Park University professors in the current issue of Christianity Today magazine suggest evangelicals are changing their images of Mary as well as the Orthodox Church.

McKnight, the Karl A. Olsson professor in religious studies and author of numerous books, including The Jesus Creed, focuses on “why the mother of Jesus was more revolutionary than we’ve been led to believe.” In his article, McKnight declares, “On the horizon today is nothing less than a Protestant reclamation of Mary . . .”

McKnight draws upon the work for his recently released book, The Real Mary, in which he says the mother of Jesus should play a more pivotal role in the life of evangelicals. To read the magazine article, see Christianity Today. To read an earlier published interview with Covenant News Service as part of this online Covenant news report, please see The Real Mary.

Bradley Nassif is associate professor of biblical and theological studies at the university and authored an article that appears on page 40 of the same magazine issue. Nassif’s article  “Will the 21st be the Orthodox Century?” argues that “fascination with the Great Tradition may signal deep changes for both evangelicals and the Orthodox.” A member of the Antiochian Orthodox Church, Nassif is currently writing The Westminster Handbook to Eastern Orthodox Theology.
