MEXICO CITY, MEXICO (November 15, 2006) – Evangelical Covenant Church missionaries who had been living in the strife-plagued state of Oaxaca until recently likely will not return soon, but they have started ministry elsewhere, according to David Mark, regional coordinator for Latin America.
“Resolution in Oaxaca will probably not come quickly nor easily,” Mark said in an email. Protestors seeking the ouster of Governor Ulises Ruiz have clashed with federal police. They accuse the governor of rigging the 2004 election and violently cracking down on dissent.

“The state’s governor (now in absentia) may try to retain power until December, when the new president takes power. Even then, no one knows when things will stabilize,” Mark said.
Cindy Hoover will relocate to Monterrey and work with the Covenant mission team there in the Family Foundation ministry. Jo Ellen Reaves will move to the Mexico City area and coordinate mission trips in that region. Laura Rodriguez will continue her short-term missionary service in the areas of Mexico City and Monterrey during the coming months.
Current mission trips from local ECC churches into Oaxaca have been cancelled or redirected to other locations until the southern state of Oaxaca stabilizes.
