CHICAGO, IL (October 23, 2006) – Hardly a week goes by that we do not receive a few comments from readers on stories published as part of the Covenant online news report.

We will share from time to time some of those responses generated through the “comments” link attached to each published story. This kind of feedback is very helpful to our Covenant News Service staff as we seek to identify and publish stories of great interest to a broad spectrum of online readers of this report.

Following are comments relating to recently published stories, edited in some cases for length. To read a particular story of interest, click on the headline.

Palmberg Joins Evangelicals’ Call to Aid Darfur, Sudan

Kathy Brawley of Strathmore, Alberta, writes: I am so glad that Glenn Palmberg is adding our collective voice to this campaign. Those of us with no “place” in political arenas find it difficult to just sit by and wear our green armbands and give whatever money we can to relief programs. We MUST be involved in social justice issues such as Darfur. Our lack of concern and involvement in this particular atrocity merely highlights underlying attitudes regarding who and what is valuable to us. This is obviously not the only issue that reveals our North American collective lack of social justice awareness, but it certainly is one that screams out for our attention! Thank you, President Palmberg!

Former Youth Pastor Sentenced to Prison

Brad Boydston, Guam, writes: The story of James Cannel is a great tragedy. I appreciate your courage in running this story on the website – not that we want to direct any more attention to this man’s sin, but that we need to maintain a level of transparency regarding the problems in our midst. It’s healthy when we can openly and graciously acknowledge these issues. It needs to be pointed out, too, that as soon as this situation surfaced, the Covenant’s Department of the Ordered Ministry, the North Pacific Conference superintendent, and the Selah Covenant Church surprised the FBI and other agencies working on this case by their level of cooperation. The police are used to churches trying to cover these things up. Not only do we NOT tolerate abuse, but we will fully cooperate with law enforcement and strive to prevent abusers from ever finding more victims.

Mom Runs to Help Son, Other Special Needs Kids

Jan and Bob Thornbloom of Chicago, IL, write: Thanks for putting the efforts the Bargs are making out in front. Their efforts to help special needs kids other than Aaron are phenominal. Aaron is a wonderful boy – his face shines when someone comes and talks to him.

Shirley Hacker of Rockford, IL, writes: Thanks for this wonderfully uplifting story, and the positive reinforcement on what a great job the camp is doing also.

Walter, Peterson Re-nominated for Leadership Roles

Robert Broline of Mercer Island, WA, writes: My first viewing of the new audio clip that go with the news report. They were very good. This is a nice enhancement to the daily news report ministry. Congratulations!

Memorial Service Thursday for Pastor Terry Mattson

Katie Kring of Whitehall, MI, writes: Thank you for making this information available. Pastor Terry will be greatly missed and I just hope that everyone will pray for Sharlene, Hannah, Caleb, Seth, Grace, Lydia, and the rest of our church body.

Congregation Says ‘Don’t Wait’ – Use Vacant Property Now

Faye Johnson of Chicago, IL, writes: This is a wonderful story! Even though there isn’t a sanctuary on this property, it’s been designated as sacred ground. And to be used in anticipation for future “Kingdom Building” is an awesome idea! I’ve had the privilege of meeting Pastor Cooper and his lovely wife, because she and I work together as a team in a local Covenant school. I pray that they will prosper and become a flourishing congregation, filled with young families, to bring peace and goodwill to our nation!

Saturday Service for Former Covenant Missionary

Edward Holstein of Ballwin, MO, writes: I was saddened to read of Mrs. Engeman’s passing. I was the roommate of her son, Steve, when he was killed in an F-14 accident, and escorted him home to Rockford. I will never forget the kindness and graciousness shown to me, an outsider, by Mrs. Engeman and the entire Engeman family. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of my good friend, Steve.

Former Bowling Alley Now a Worship Center

Candy Rensch of Garrison, NY, writes: Love you guys! Hope the Lord increases the ministry.

Vision for Detroit Ministry Fast Becoming Reality

Brad Schnepp of Anderson, IN, writes: I don’t know how old this article is, but Pastor Carey spoke at my college today and he has me hooked. This man is an incredible speaker, with the perfect personality to keep anyone with all different religious interests hooked. He seems like an amazing man. Me and some of my buddies from school are mostly likely going to go on a road trip soon to see him in action in his home church. I can’t wait!
