School supplies were distributed, but neighborhood residents also were treated to free health screenings, job listings, the opportunity to join a food co-op, and voter registration signups. Various entertainment offerings also filled the day.
The church distributed 450 backpacks filled with school supplies that included folders, spiral notebooks, scissors, glue, erasers, pens and pencils, Johannon says. Other churches helped contribute the supplies, says Johannon, who also chairs the congregation’s Justice and Compassion Committee. The congregation began sponsoring the fair in 2004, when the church opened.
Medical students provided the health screenings, which included diabetes testing. They also provided information on issues such as childhood obesity.
A dance troupe and singers performed during the day. Attendees also enjoyed carnival games.
