JAVA, INDONESIA (May 30, 2006) – Covenant World Relief (CWR) has supplied $25,000 to help victims of the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Indonesia Saturday, says Jim Sundholm, director of CWR.

World Relief International automatically draws the Covenant funds from an account used for immediate assistance. World Relief has been working with partners in Indonesia since a tsunami struck the region in 2004, Sundholm says.

According to news reports, the death toll from Saturday’s quake has risen to 5,700. Officials told the Associated Press that they believe no more survivors will be found.

The Indonesian government has reported that 6,500 people were seriously wounded and 100,000 were homeless. The quake also destroyed roughly 19,500 homes and seriously damaged 13,600. Water, food and health care continue to be in short supply.

Covenanters desiring to contribute should send checks to Covenant World Relief, 5101 N. Francisco, Chicago IL 60625 and designate them for the Indonesian earthquake.
