“As of yesterday (Sunday) at 3 p.m., Stan White (Alpine executive director) reported that residents from Crestline had been allowed to return to their homes,” says Evelyn Johnson, superintendent of the Pacific Southwest Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC). “He was excited as it appeared that return to the camp area of Alpine might be within the first part of this week.
“The major damage area in relation to our churches has been the Scripps Ranch area where Canyon Springs Covenant Church is located,” Johnson continues in an update to Covenant News Service. “Relief help is being provided by both the Canyon Springs church and other churches in the San Diego area. Clairemont Covenant Church is serving as the ‘hub’ for distributing relief aid in the form of dollars.”
A major boost to the Clairemont relief effort came today with the announcement that the ECC through its Covenant World Relief arm has sent $5,000 to assist the church in its relief work.
“We are deeply grateful for the prayers of many that I know have strengthened the leadership at Alpine and particularly the San Diego churches as they have guided others through this time of anxiety,” Johnson says. “Please continue to pray for them during these forthcoming days of restoration work and grief processing.”
The area of Mount Miguel is considered to be out of danger, according to Kathleen Jenkins. “The Mount Miguel staff and residents had a car wash last week and raised $4,500 for the Canyon Springs Covenant Church,” Jenkins said. Eight church families lost homes in the devastating fires north and east of San Diego. Other church families opened their homes to help the victims of that disaster, said Jack Hawkins, pastor.
