OKINAWA, JAPAN (December 18, 2001) – The Christian Academy of Japan boys tennis team, based in Tokyo, won the recent 13-team Far East Tennis Tournament for private high schools (Christian, international, and U.S. military) in Korea, Hong Kong and Japan.
The Evangelical Covenant Church sends missionary children to the school. The head coach is Covenant missionary Don Johnson, a math and Bible teacher at the school.
Luke Cummings and Stig Olson placed first in the consolation bracket of first doubles and Caleb Cummings and David Millard helped The Christian Academy win the team title by winning a three-set doubles semifinal match in the winners bracket. Caleb Cummings also played well in singles, earning the nomination for the Most Valuable Player award in his league after going unbeaten during the season.
The Christian Academy placed second in a junior varsity league tourney, thanks to a second-place finish in singles competition by Joni Yosypiw. Teammate Andrew LaDue was nominated for the Most Improved Player award.
The Christian Academy of Japan is a school sponsored by six mission organizations, including the Evangelical Covenant Church. The school was founded in 1950 and serves primarily children in the missionary community from grades K-12. A total of about 425 attend the school.
