MINNEAPOLIS, MN (December 10, 2001) – Nearly a dozen athletes from Minnehaha Academy High School athletics programs were honored during the fall as four soccer players received state and regional mention.
The following Minnehaha Academy athletes were honored in soccer: senior Kemmons Feldman received an invitation to Olympic Regional Development pool competition in the Midwest and traveled to Chicago to train with the Major Soccer League’s Chicago Fire. He played in Cocoa, Florida, against three other regional squads in November as scouts from the U.S. National soccer team evaluated talent. In girls soccer, All-State honors were earned by midfielder Katy Boynton and goalkeeper Kelly Hagg, while defender Krista Livingston received honorable mention.
Junior Lauren Brueberg of the girls cross-country team had plenty to celebrate this fall as well. In September, Brueberg was clocked in 14 minutes and 13 seconds for the 4,000 meters (2.5 miles) and set a meet record at the Princeton Invitational. She won the Class A title and broke the Minnehaha Academy school record in the process. That effort earned her the Athlete of the Week award for Channel 11 in Minneapolis, the local NBC television affiliate. Brueberg capped off an outstanding season by finishing eighth at the Minnesota State Championship cross-country meet.
The Minnehaha Academy football team strengthened its reputation as good student-athletes with high marks on and off the field. The squad’s collective GPA earned them the 2001 Academic State Championship in the state’s Class 3A division. And five Tri-Metro All-Conference players led the squad to a 7-4 record and a berth in the section finals in the state playoffs.
Junior tailback Todd Johnson was the second leading rusher in the state, compiling 1,726 yards and averaging 8.1 yards per carry. Others named were senior linebacker and fullback David Martinson, senior offensive tackle and linebacker Ross Wangensteen, junior linebacker and offensive center Taylor Beahrs and junior wide receiver and defensive back Jordan Baynard.
The state-ranked girls basketball program also received good news in November as two players signed national letters of intent with Division I schools. Guard Lee Durant signed with Auburn University in Alabama and center Megan Foy signed with Montana State University after helping their team place third in their division in last year’s state playoffs.
