BIWABIK, MN (December, 1998) – It has been almost four months since a fire damaged the building that for more than 40 years the Biwabik Covenant Church family has called home. Initially, it was thought to have been lightning that struck the church, but after investigating further, it was officially ruled an arson. Two juveniles have been charged with starting the fire.
These past four months have brought many changes in our congregational life. We have gone from worshipping one Sunday in our own church building to meeting for three weeks in our local Senior Center. Eventually, after much prayer, we were allowed to use our local school (it is empty because of a school merger with two other communities). At this time, it has become our long-term, temporary place of worship.
Although it is has been difficult transitioning from a beautiful sanctuary to a warm gymnasium, from padded pews to metal chairs, God has been faithful. We thank our God for the many blessings He has bestowed upon us. We have seen new faces and lives have been transformed. During a 45-Prayer Challenge (September through November), we witnessed God at work, answering many prayers and opening doors once thought closed. On November 1, we welcomed five individuals into membership and attendance overall has remained strong. It has been especially encouraging to meet for worship and Sunday School all on the same level (no basement).
Although the issues of insurance, cleanup, rebuilding or relocating have not yet been settled, our congregation is keenly aware of God’s provision and direction. He is the one who is in charge and we look to Him for guidance, wherever that may lead. Please continue to pray for us, for wisdom and discernment for the months ahead.
We would like to thank you, our Covenant family, for supporting us. Your cards, letters and phone calls have been uplifting. For more information or a list of needs, please do not hesitate to contact us: Biwabik Covenant Church, P.O. Box 609, Biwabik, MN, 55708-0609 (218-865-6216).
